Rift Labs has spent more than a decade pushing LED technology. Photosynthetic is where that work meets food. Indoor farming and controlled-environment agriculture are where a growing share of food will come from, but only if the light is exactly right: the correct spectrum and intensity for each plant, at each stage of its life. Rift Labs asked us to build the software that makes that control possible.
In controlled-environment agriculture, light is not a setting, it is the input that shapes yield, taste, and quality. Growers need to shape the spectrum and intensity precisely and repeat it consistently, plant by plant and stage by stage. The software had to make that kind of control simple enough to trust and specific enough to matter.
Photosynthetic is hardware in a demanding environment, and the software runs the conversation with it. From the outset the priority was a rock-solid link between the software and the lighting hardware, so a grow is never left guessing what the lights are doing.
The software sits between the grower and the hardware. An interface to shape the light, cloud infrastructure to keep the hardware current and secure, and a sensor loop that adjusts the lighting in real time.
Growers tune intensity, temperature, and wavelength through a single human-machine interface, and build repeatable light environments tailored to each plant across its whole life cycle. It is friendly enough that someone can navigate it comfortably the first time they sit down, and precise enough for professional growing.
By adjusting intensity, temperature, and wavelength, the software gives each plant the light it can actually use at each stage of its life, and no more. That precision is where the energy savings come from. Growers stop over-lighting, and operating costs drop with it.
We planned and built the cloud infrastructure that keeps the link between software and sensors dependable, handles over-the-air firmware updates and patches, and hardens the system against attempts to access or modify it. The hardware in the grow room stays current and secure without anyone climbing a ladder to service it.
