The car subscription from Bertel O. Steen: we built the entire mobile app and the Bluetooth-based locking system.

The challenge

Fleks, the car subscription started by Bertel O. Steen and later co-owned by SpareBank 1, let you subscribe to a car with no lock-in: pick a car, keep it as long as you like, and let Fleks handle servicing, tyre changes and inspections. The whole customer experience lived in the mobile app, and the car had to unlock with your phone. Keyless access over Bluetooth is technically demanding: low latency, a stable connection to the vehicle and secure authentication.

The solution

We built the entire mobile app for iOS and Android, where customers followed their subscription, usage and payment history, and the underlying BLE locking system that let them unlock the car without a physical key. The web interface was built by another team.

Lessons and insights

Protocol choices and authentication design have to be settled early; they are hard to change later. Fleks extends our portfolio into physical-digital integration.
